Where it sits, what it works with, and why a dump that was walked away from decades ago is worth going back to.
Project 1076 is a South African chrome tailings retreatment and rehabilitation venture. Its resource is a dump of historic tailings: ore that was mined, crushed and put through a wash plant in an earlier era, then discarded once the plant had taken what it could.
What the plants of that era could not hold onto is still in the material. The project reclaims the dump in planned blocks, recovers the remaining chrome through a modern separation circuit, returns the processed residue to the mined-out area, and rehabilitates the ground as it goes. When the resource is finished, the dump is gone and the land is under vegetation again.
Tailings are not empty. They are what a plant could not economically hold onto on the day it ran, and the reasons it could not have all changed since.
Grade for this specific resource is confirmed by the sampling programme: [CONFIRMED GRADE RANGE].
Finer fractions were lost. Older gravity circuits struggled with fine material and sent a great deal of recoverable chromite out with the tails.
Cut-offs were higher. Material below the cut-off grade of the day was waste by definition. At current chrome prices a good deal of it is not.
The equipment is better. Spiral and dense-medium separation recover at particle sizes and grades that were simply out of reach then.
The hard work is done. The material is already broken, on surface and reachable. No blasting, no hoisting, no dewatering a pit.
The site lies in the Bushveld Complex, the geological formation that holds the overwhelming majority of the world’s chrome. Mining has been part of this landscape for generations, and so have the dumps it left behind.

Project 1076 is run through South African registered companies, with a holding company and a separate operating company, each with its own board.
The venture brings together mining and land rights, project management, processing capacity and governance. Each partner holds the part of the work it does for a living.
Day to day operations are led by an appointed operating team based at the site, reporting to the operating board against an approved plan.

Five stages, from the first sample to the day the ground is signed off.
